Description

Pokemon ReDX is a reimagining of the original Pokemon Red but in Generation 2 graphical style. It’s similar to how Link’s Awakening DX updated the original Link’s Awakening for the Game Boy Color, offering enhanced visuals and improved gameplay.

Plot

The plot of Pokemon ReDX stays true to Pokemon Red, but there are plenty of new events and characters to keep things fresh. In addition to the familiar rivalry with Blue, you’ll also have a second rival along for the journey. If you play as a boy, your new rival is Jade, and if you play as a girl, it’s Jasper. While Blue remains the cocky, competitive rival focused on defeating you in battle, Jade/Jasper is more friendly and focuses on completing the Pokédex.

Professor Oak tasks you, Blue, and Jade/Jasper with beta testing his greatest invention, the Pokédex. Along the way, you’ll work to bring down Team Rocket, with the HGSS Admins now appearing in Kanto. Additionally, Looker has arrived in the region, trying to uncover Team Rocket’s motives. He’ll assist you from time to time as you progress.

As you take on the Gym Challenge, the stakes are higher than ever because Kanto’s Champion’s throne is vacant. The Pokémon League has issued a challenge to all trainers, giving you the chance to claim the throne and become the next Champion!

Features

  • Explore Kanto in Gen 2’s Visual Style: Experience the classic Kanto region with upgraded Gen 2-inspired graphics, bringing new life to familiar locations.
  • New Events and Characters: Alongside the original story, enjoy new encounters and character developments that enrich your adventure.
  • Kanto Facelift & Expanded Regional Pokédex: The Kanto region has been upgraded with new areas and an expanded Pokédex of around 300 Pokémon, including new Mega Evolutions. Explore redesigned locations like Routes 9 and 10, now transformed into canyons, and a new path in Rock Tunnel that leads to a snowy mountaintop.
  • Apex Pokémon: These powerful creatures, similar to Totem Pokémon, can’t be captured but drop valuable loot when defeated. Each Apex Pokémon resides in its own den, providing unique challenges.
  • The traditional “Switch” battle style has been changed—trainers no longer get to see the opponent’s incoming Pokémon, adding extra challenge and strategy.
  • Discover rare Pokémon and items hidden throughout Kanto in secret grottos, rewarding exploration.
  • Unlock Wonder Trade during the story, giving you the chance to trade Pokémon for surprise new additions to your team.
  • The Cable Club in Pokémon Centers has been replaced by the Trainer’s Nook, where you can access various services that unlock as you earn badges.
  • Instead of using FLY, nearly every major location features a Pidgeot Express service, which can fly you to previously visited locations for a fee.

Progress

The game is 95% Complete! The whole game is playable, with only a couple of post-game side quests needing to be finished.

To Do

  1. Add New Pokémon to the Dex: Incorporate evolutions from Gen 9 into the game. There are also several Mega Forms in progress that aren’t yet ready for inclusion, but they are documented in the Dex Spreadsheet.
  2. Create More Battle Animations: Continue developing battle animations. Many attack animations have already been created, and some animations for the GSC Essentials pack were made by you.
  3. Fix Music Issues: The current music is in mp3 format and doesn’t loop properly. Future plans include converting these tracks to proper looping formats and creating a unique battle theme for Blue.
  4. Grammar Corrections: Clean up and standardize text, removing any cringe-worthy dialogue from earlier drafts. Focus on consistent use of “Pokémon” with the correct ‘é’ throughout.
  5. Post-Game Event: Complete the photography side quest by adding the two missing photos (Lance and Agatha).
  6. In-Game Pokédex Fixes: Correct the in-game Pokédex so that Pokémon locations display properly. Use the existing spreadsheet to ensure accuracy. (linked in the useful stuff section)

Important

MAKE SURE TO INSTALL THE INCLUDED FONTS the game will not look proper if you do not.

Save often, I believe I’ve found and fixed most locks, but who knows what might crop up that I missed! (Also please report to me those issues!)

Known Bugs

  1. Walkable Tiles: There are a few tiles in the game that you can walk on, even though you aren’t supposed to.
  2. Visible Map Edges: In some locations, you can see the edge of the map.
  3. Certain Doors: Some doors that aren’t supposed to lead anywhere allow you to walk on them. These doors were designed to highlight which ones you can enter, but some have movement permission issues.
  4. S.S. Anne Plot Bug: When the S.S. Anne plot starts and you’re locked on the ship, don’t lose until the rival battle. If you lose before this, you won’t be able to leave. Losing to your rival is fine, but the issue occurs in a brief window before that battle when the exit is blocked.
  5. Battle Animation Issues: Some battle animations don’t function correctly, including Stealth Rock, the Terrains, and Bide, even though the animation editor shows them as working.
  6. Duplicate TMs: There may be a duplicate TM, though the intention was to make all TMs one-time finds. Some TR moves overlap with TM moves as well.
  7. Mega Evolution Shiny Sprites: Mega Evolutions currently lack shiny sprites. For example, a shiny black Charizard will turn into an orange Charizard upon Mega Evolving. Mega Dragonite is also missing a back sprite.
  8. HM Item Behavior: HM items might behave strangely. Initially, they were set to work as key items, but currently, some HM moves can be used directly from the bag or call a Pokémon like in BDSP. Surf still requires a Pokémon in your party to know the move.
  9. Apex Pokémon Ability: Apex Pokémon all currently use the “Apex Power” ability, which provides stat boosts. In the future, the ability will be customized to combine Apex Power with each Apex Pokémon’s base ability (e.g., Apex Beedrill will have a fused “Adaptability + Apex Power” ability).
