Introduction
Some of you may recall the 2013-2014 hack “Mirage Of Tales: A New Age Dawns.” I started the project after finding ROM hacking, inspired by my love of class-based RPGs and “Choose Your Own Adventure” novels. I was too eager to get started, so there was little planning, and I was learning how to hack (and make stuff up) as I went. Naturally, the gameplay was abysmal.
The download links have been removed since the demos from 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017 no longer reflect my current level of effort. The project has been started and renewed several times, first with FireRed, then with Emerald, and now with the Pokémerald decompilation.
I’ve worked hard over the years to enhance my skills in every part of ROM hacking and to reproduce my initial idea. Previously, it was always a solitary effort, but in 2020, mgriffin joined me in producing the game. That’s enough history for now, I believe. Hello and welcome to Mirage Of Tales 2.0!
Game Setting
Avlar is a quiet country with a long history, known for its extensive forests, undulating hills, and towering mountains. You play as an orphaned eighteen-year-old who received a scholarship at the Pokémon Trainer Academy in Umber Valley, a quaint little village in the Ore District.
It’s graduation day, and it’s time to take your last exam, find a job, and set out into the great wide world with your Pokémon by your side. Which career will you pursue? What type of person do you intend to be? It’s all up to you. Every decision you make has the power to change the trajectory of your life.
Careers
You can choose your own trainer class if you want to. Each profession has its own set of goals, missions, and plot lines. Make an informed decision because you only have one chance!
Trainer
The “default” occupation, you are given this title immediately on the day of your graduation. You’ll have no boss to answer to and no headquarters to report to. If you want to play Mirage Of Tales like you would a typical Pokémon game, with complete flexibility, this is the road for you!
Rogue
These lone criminals, like Trainers, are their own bosses. Trainers can get the Rogue title by committing minor crimes or duping others into giving them what they want.
Ranger
You can join the Ranger Union, which is well-known in the Avlar region. Following your initial Academy-style training, your responsibilities as a Pokémon Ranger will include safeguarding endangered Pokémon, caring for the environment, and assisting those in need.
Researcher
Become a Pokémon Researcher by joining Avlar’s Research team! You’ll be undertaking fieldwork or gathering data for your Pokédex, and you’ll even be whisked away to special, unknown regions.
*Note: other Careers included in previous releases will be added later as expansions.

Community
I do have a Discord server in which small updates are posted. Meaningful updates will be posted here, but if you’d like to follow day-to-day progress on Discord or chat about the game you would be more than welcome to join our little community.
